Washed Out, Brave Losses & a Leaderboard Nobody Wants to Top

Opening weekend of Season 49, and York Cricket Club served up the full range — a washout, two hard-fought losses, some genuinely gutsy cricket, and a disciplinary leaderboard that has already claimed eight victims.

Welcome back, everyone. We've missed this.

Game 1: YCC vs Lumberjacks — Rain Wins, No Contest

Game 1 was abandoned before a ball was bowled. The skies had other ideas, and the rain claimed what would have been our season opener without so much as a coin toss. Nothing to do but pack up, head home, and remind ourselves that this is Canada.

Game 2: Nightwatchmen CC vs YCC — Heartbreak by 2 Runs

Result: Nightwatchmen CC won by 2 runs (Nightwatchmen 154 all out; YCC 152 all out)

Two runs. That's all that separated York from a winning start to Season 49. Two. Runs. If there was ever a game to file under "so close it hurts," this was it.

With the ball: Nightwatchmen posted 154, but it was hard-earned against a disciplined York attack. Shawn Rankothgedra was the pick of the bowlers with a superb 4/25 from 8 overs — steaming in, keeping it tight, and making the batters work for everything. Echi Fernando (2/25) and Pradeep Nadarajah (2/26) chipped in with key scalps, while Rafi Mohamed (1/22) applied the pressure at the top. Tom Adams (66) was Nightwatchmen's standout, but his dismissal off Rafi's bowling proved the turning point.

With the bat: The chase started in nightmare fashion. Four wickets tumbled for just 8 runs as Viraj Parekh ripped through the top order (4/20), leaving York reeling at 8/4 inside three overs. Most sides fold at that point. York didn't. Rafi Mohamed (40 off 71) steadied the ship with real grit and character, building a crucial 31-run stand with Basha Jailani (12). Venkat Sivaprakash (19) and Shawn Rankothgedra (19) kept the momentum alive, and Kaushik Krishnamurthy (13) ground out vital runs during a patient 128-run partnership in the middle with Rafi. York needed 4 off the final over with 2 wickets in hand. It wasn't to be, falling 2 runs short. Gut-wrenching — but what a fight.

Note on wide count: York's wide tally in this game was 21. After the 45-wide horror show of last season's opener, that's a significant improvement — the bowling unit is clearly listening.

Game 3: YCC vs Ramblers CC — So Close, Again

Result: Ramblers CC won by 2 wickets (YCC 144 all out; Ramblers 150/8)

Another one-run-adjacent finish. Another full-value effort from the York lads. This time it was 2 wickets rather than 2 runs, but the story was the same: York competed hard right to the end and made Ramblers earn every single point.

With the bat: Three debutants stepped up on the day and made an immediate impression. Avinash Sukumaran top-scored with a fluent 32, showing great composure on debut. Riyaj Fasik cracked a punchy 18 before being dismissed, and debut boy Pasidu Kollins got off the mark before a tough lbw ended his knock early. Rajit Kadirgamar (16) and Stephen Williams (13) kept the innings ticking in the middle overs. York posted 144 — a competitive, if not commanding, total.

With the ball: York's bowlers kept the pressure on throughout. Rafi Mohamed (2/25) and Stephen Williams (2/26) were the chief wicket-takers, with Anuradha Gamage (1/12) delivering a tidy, economical spell. Shawn Rankothgedra was again relentless through his 8 overs, and Harry Shivs chipped in with the key breakthrough. Ramblers' Shafqat Ali (35) and a late cameo from Saqlain Kazi (16 off 7 balls) proved the difference. York needed one more wicket. It didn't come.

Note on wide count: 17 wides in this game, down from 37 in last year's corresponding weekend. The captain noticed. The numbers back it up.

Captain's Corner: Rafi Speaks

One unexpected challenge this season hasn't been opposition bowling attacks — it's keeping up with Captain Rafi's WhatsApp messages. What began as a simple team update has evolved into a fully produced multimedia experience: emojis, subheadings, bullet points, tea regulations, parking guidance, environmental initiatives, and reporting instructions detailed enough to launch a space mission. By the time you've reached the end, you've forgotten whether you're playing cricket or attending a mandatory workplace compliance seminar. Rumour has it Rafi's been granted exclusive access to ChatGPT Emoji Premium Plus Ultra — a plan so advanced that roughly 25% of every message is cricket information, and the remaining 75% is a comprehensive tour of WhatsApp's emoji library. Several players no longer read them in one sitting, preferring to tackle them chapter by chapter throughout the week. We've done the hard work for you and summarised it below (both the emoji stats and the cricket part - lol).

Captain Rafi's Emoji Hall of Fame (First 3 Whatsapp messages)

Pic Caption: Independent analysis conducted by the York Cricket Club Department of Advanced WhatsApp Studies. Club statisticians have confirmed that Captain Rafi's first three WhatsApp announcements contained more emojis than York Cricket Club scored boundaries in the opening two weekends of the season.

Alright, despite the back-to-back losses- Captain Rafi Mohamed kept his message calm (100% emoticon free), clear, and characteristically honest. Two hard-fought losses, yes — but the grit and never-give-up attitude were plain for everyone to see.

The Stat of the Week: Wide count dropped to 21 and 17 across the two games, compared to a whopping 45 and 37 during last year's opening weekend. That's not a coincidence — that's a bowling unit that's put in the work and shown up with purpose. The captain acknowledged it, and so do we. Keep it up.

Rafi also asked everyone to reflect honestly on their own performance and think about how they can impact the next game. Not dwell on the past, but learn from it. Solid advice — the kind of thinking that turns close losses into wins.

A big welcome to debutants Avinash, Pasidu, and Riyaj, who slotted into the York culture seamlessly on their first outings. Three new faces, three strong characters, plenty more to come from all three.

Big thanks also to Pradeep and Stephen for organising a fantastic tea — because if there's one thing York takes as seriously as its cricket, it's the spread at the break. And a well-earned shoutout to Harry, Basha, Shawn, and the captain himself for arriving early to clean up the shed. The unsung heroes. The maintenance legends. The ones holding the whole operation together before a single ball is bowled.

And on selection: with a squad of 35, everyone will get their cricket. The captain's message was clear — patience and a team-first mindset will be appreciated and rewarded.

The Punctuality Register: Open for Business

Right, let's address it properly. The captain has formally opened a Punctuality Register for Season 49. Consider it less a punishment chart and more a professional standard — the kind that any serious cricket club holds its players to. Reporting time exists for a reason: the team gets built around it.

Eight players pick up a note on their file from the opening weekend: Dominic, Kaushik, Venkat, Charan, Pradeep, Satish K, Anuradha, and Riyaj — each with one entry against their name. Nobody is in trouble. Yet. But the register is open, the ink is fresh, and the captain has a long memory.

A quick note on the definition of "present": feet on the ground, kit ready, at the venue by reporting time. Sitting in the parking lot does not count. Sending your bag in a teammate's car ahead of you does not count. Having someone RSVP on your behalf does not count. The only valid presence is a physical one.

The register stays open all season. Clear your name this weekend.

Coming Up: Fixtures This Week

York has three games on the schedule this week. Reporting time is strictly 11:45 AM for Saturday and Sunday — and yes, that means the Punctuality Register will be watching.

Saturday, June 6 — YCC vs Wesley | Reporting: Strictly 11:45 AM

Sunday, June 7 — YCC vs Rebels | Reporting: Strictly 11:45 AM | Tea: Karthik

Wednesday, June 10 — YCC vs Old Bias (Away) | Reporting: Strictly 9:00 AM | Format: 35

Let's Go, York

Two losses on the board, but zero losses in spirit. York turned up, competed, and showed the kind of grit that turns a new season around quickly. The wide count is down. The debutants have settled in beautifully. The shed is clean. The tea was top class.

Now it's time to turn those near misses into wins. Three games this week. Three chances to set the season right.

Let's get those results.

Until next week...
