Cricket season is almost here.

The kits are coming out, the bags are being packed, and a few players are probably discovering that last year’s gloves, pads, and hamstrings may all need some attention.

For York Cricket Club, this is a special one. We are getting ready to begin our 49th season — another summer of cricket, friendship, competition, laughter, and the occasional shot that should never be attempted again.

To our returning members, welcome back. To our new members, welcome to the York family. To our families, friends, readers, supporters, and well-wishers, thank you for staying connected with us.

At York, cricket brings us together. But it is the people, the stories, the jokes, the post-game chats, and the memories that keep us coming back season after season.

And just like that, the season is calling again.

The Nets Have Already Started

Before the first official match, York players have already been busy getting back into cricket mode through regular net sessions.

Some sessions have been self-funded by the players, while others have been supported by the club. Either way, the mission has been clear: get the body moving, find the middle of the bat, remember where the off stump is, and convince ourselves that we are all ready for a big season.

The nets have been a great way for players to shake off the offseason rust. Batters have been trying to find timing. Bowlers have been trying to find rhythm. Fielders have been trying to avoid eye contact whenever someone says “fielding drills.”

More importantly, these sessions have brought everyone together again. Old faces, new faces, friendly advice, friendly banter, and the usual preseason confidence that every cricketer somehow finds in April and May.

Season 49 Begins on May 23

York officially begins its 49th season on May 23 with our traditional intra-club match.

This is always a great way to start the year. It gives everyone a chance to get back on the field, meet new members, reconnect with familiar ones, and enjoy cricket before the serious business of scorecards, averages, and “I was unlucky” explanations begins.

For players, it is a chance to get some time in the middle and a few overs in the legs.

For members who are not playing, it is still a perfect day to drop by, say hello, enjoy the atmosphere, and remind everyone from the boundary that the shot was definitely not needed.

The intra-club match is more than a warm-up. It is the first proper York gathering of the season, and we hope to see as many members there as possible.

New Faces, Same York Spirit

Every new season brings something fresh to the club. New players, new stories, new cricket styles, new WhatsApp reactions, and maybe even a few new nicknames that nobody asked for.

This year, York is pleased to welcome:

Avinash, Guna, Kaushik, Musa, Paran, Pasidu, Pradeep, and Riyaj.

Some have already had a taste of York cricket, while others are just starting their journey with us. Either way, we are very happy to have them as part of the club.

A club does not grow only by adding names to a squad list. It grows when people bring energy, respect, humor, commitment, and a good attitude. That is what keeps York strong year after year.

To our newest members: welcome aboard. May your first season bring runs, wickets, catches, good memories, and at least one moment that gets discussed far longer than necessary.

We are also happy to welcome back Satish Kumar and George after a short break. York has a funny way of calling people back, and it is great to see familiar faces return.

A special mention goes to Lahiru, who moves from student member to full-time member this season. It is always nice to see players grow within the club, and this is a proud moment for both Lahiru and York.

The Committee: Keeping the Circus Running

A quick nod to York’s committee — the brave souls who handle fixtures, money, admin, captaincy, and the website so the rest of us can arrive with a cricket bag, three excuses, and no idea where the stumps are.

Jayantha, Rajit, Atulan, Shawn, and Rafi keep the club moving through schedules, spreadsheets, scorecards, reminders, and the occasional WhatsApp message long enough to require a drinks break.

The club may look like it runs on cricket, but really, it runs on patience, mild panic, and people making questionable life choices in the name of volunteering. May their inboxes stay quiet, their spreadsheets behave, and their sanity survive Season 49.

Match-Day Housekeeping, York Style

Before the season begins, a few gentle reminders — not a lecture, just enough to stop match day from becoming a live-action group chat.

On the field, let’s keep communication in English so everyone is included, whether it is a field change, bowling plan, or the classic panic call of “Catch it!”

Full whites mean full whites — including white pads. We may not all play like Test cricketers, but at least we can look suspiciously close.

Availability matters. If you confirm, the team is built around you. If plans change, tell the captain directly. Please do not run your own mini-selection committee from the parking lot.

Reporting time is usually 11:45 AM. That means at the ground, not just leaving home, not looking for socks, and definitely not texting “5 mins away” from another postal code.

Simple stuff. Clear communication, proper kit, honest availability, and showing up on time — four small things that make the cricket much better and the captain slightly less grey.

And while we’re at it, a quick reminder of something even more important.

At York, the way we play matters.

Respect is not optional — it is part of the game.

For teammates.

For opponents.

For umpires.

For the game.

And for the shirt we wear.

Because the best version of York is not just a team that plays good cricket. It is a team that supports each other, competes hard, enjoys the moments, and carries itself with pride — on and off the field.

Follow York Throughout the Season

There will be plenty to follow this year: fixtures, scorecards, performances, photos, match stories, player moments, and all the little memories that make up a cricket season.

Here We Go Again

The 49th season is almost here.

The nets have started.

The squad is ready.

The whites are waiting.

The schedule is out.

The excuses are probably being prepared already.

To the batters: may the middle of the bat be kind.

To the bowlers: may the edges carry.

To the fielders: may the ball find someone else first.

To our supporters and well-wishers: thank you for being part of the York journey.

York Cricket Club is ready for another summer of cricket, friendship, laughter, competition, and community.

Season 49, here we come.
